Skills Gap Summit:

Connecting Education with Job Opportunities
Perspectives from Massachusetts Leaders in Business, Education and Public Policy

Wednesday, November 14, 2012
9:15 AM to 11:00 AM
Universal Technical Institute
1 Upland Road, Norwood, Massachusetts

According to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, approximately 90% of the jobs in the fastest-growing occupations require some level of postsecondary education and training, yet many of those who graduate from high school are unprepared for postsecondary education or the workforce.

A collaborative effort between educators, employers and policymakers is needed to identify the issues affecting this skills gap, and work toward possible solutions.

We invite you to join leaders in education, business, and economic and labor policy for a discussion on the trends and challenges in the local job market; the effects of economic and demographic factors and the gap in Massachusetts' skilled labor force; and the role of education in helping to close this gap and prepare today's workforce for job opportunities.

Summit points of discussion will include:

  • Identifying the challenges and opportunities in Massachusetts' regional labor markets and how the skills gap is affecting local industries and hiring practices
  • Impact of current STEM initiatives and the need to engage students and parents
  • Insight into how to better align education and workforce development programs with labor market needs
  • Ideas for creating successful partnerships between business, education, and government leaders to prepare the next generation of workers

Registration begins at 8:45 a.m. Following the discussion, UTI invites you to join a tour of the Norwood campus.
